Flowrap machine doubles packing rate

RedPack Packaging Machinery had the new P325E-FI flowpack machine on display at this year's Fruit Logistica in Berlin. Redpack's Marketing Manager explained that the machine was developed due to a gap in the market.

"Before the installation of the Redpack flow wrappers, apple packers were using 'Polybags' packing at around 20-30ppm and then hand labelling which was slow and labour intensive. The new flowrappers use OPP film on a roll, so no more polybags. They have increased the packaging speed to around 60-70ppm and with an on-board printer pack, information is automatically printed directly onto the pack film."

The P325E-FI machine has a “Frictionless Infeed” which has been developed to minimise fruit damage in transportation during the flow wrapping process. On a conventional product infeed the product flows within stainless steel side guides and is pushed along a stainless steel bed by stainless steel pushers, so there are lots of areas that can cause bruising and scuffing.

Redpacks “Frictionless Infeed” incorporates a series of carrying belts along the bed and along the side guides as well as soft front and back product supports so that apples have no instances of drag or hard areas to cause bruising. Apple transfer from the infeed onto the wrapping film is an area that can cause misplacement of the fruit collation and potential bruising. Redpack have overcome this by adding a transfer belt system that carries the apples all the way onto the film, furthermore, to avoid disturbance to the collation through the seam crimp module, an overhead arrangement holds the apples firmly but gently in place.

The machine can also be adapted for other fruits of similar size for example pears, oranges, lemons, kiwis, peaches, tomatoes, avocados and many more, it can wrap products in trays as well as trayless giving more versatility.

Also on display at Fruit Logistica was the Redpack NTS top seal flow wrapping machine. This highly successful design has all of the features that you expect on a quality packaging machine such as ease of operator use, performance, efficiencies, longevity, reliability and the latest drive system and touch screen HMI.

To ensure Redpack help clients meet their packaging requirements Redpack work closely with them to match the NTS with their requirements and it is this close collaboration that has ensured that it is the perfect match for busy packing areas.

One of the clients requested a packing speed of 120ppm with a pack cut off that is around 400mm long equating to a very fast film speed of 48 metres/minute.

Additional features were added to make sure that the seam and end crimp seals remain good. At this speed the reels of film can run out pretty quickly so Redpack added an automatic reel splice to speed up reel changes and to reduce machine stoppage time. There is a range of infeed styles and lengths for hand feeding product. At the outfeed end there can be variations in conveyor lengths but, if preferred, customers can have an integrated roundtable or an integrated 90 degree conveyor, which are features that save space and get all of the electrics neatly incorporated into the flow wrapper electrical cabinet. Redpack are extremely safety conscious and ensure that all of their packaging equipment meets appropriate EC Directives and harmonised standards, the company are prepared to work to clients own machine engineering standards when required.

All Redpack machines are designed and manufactured in the UK under one roof.

Redpack have sold machines in over 30 countries around the world such as Poland, Netherlands, South Africa, Australia, Mexico, India and China, the company also has distributors in The Netherlands, South Africa, Ireland, New Zealand & Australia also Redpack now has a branch in Germany based in Cologne.
