Share of organic products at BetOrta growing steadily

"Price of regular fluctuates more than organics"

The supply of organic products at BelOrta is slowly but steadily increasing. Sander de Proost is responsible for the organics department and he indicates that assortment is growing step by step. "There is a stable demand which is gradually increasing. The largest organic products for BelOrta are cauliflower, leek, chicory and soft fruit."

He indicates that chicory is a grower. "As of last year the range of organic chicory was extended. Joosy Depaepe from Nijvel has been growing chicory for years and besides this classic cultivation, now also has a second, fully separated company which will focus on the cultivation of organic chicory." The demand for organic chicory is also growing. "The quality is hugely appreciated, both at home and abroad. Most is sold in Belgium, but there is also interest from France and other European countries."

Difference in price

According to Sander there is a clear difference in the price formation and stability of regular and organic fruit and vegetables. "The price of regular fluctuates more than organics. At certain times of year the prices are almost side by side, but at the moment there is a big difference in price between organic chicory and regular chicory. The cost price of organic is also higher, of course."

BelOrta expects the share of organics to increase further over the next few years. "We notice that some growers want to switch. This is a big step and it happens in dribs and drabs. We expect a few growers to switch this year. The sales are also gradual: shops don't start with the entire assortment, just one or two products. When they're convinced, sales increase."

Organic assortment
BelOrta's organic fruit and vegetable assortment is diverse and there are various packaging possibilities.
