Mexico: Lime prices stay low, avocado prices soar

Lime prices continue at their lowest levels in recent months, as one can buy a kilo of this citrus for only $2 pesos and in some places for $1.90 pesos. This is the lowest price since mid-2014 when the lime prices overcame the $60 pesos per kilo barrier.

Tomato prices also decreased from $6 pesos per kilogram to $4.90 pesos per kilo in some places at the markets in Merida.

White onion prices went down from $14 pesos to $9.90 pesos per kilo, and purple onion prices decreased from $15 pesos per kilo to $11 pesos per kilo.

However, the price of some basic food products, such as the avocado, has had a significant increase. Up to last week, avocado prices remained at $30 pesos per kilogram and today they reached $45 pesos.

It's worth noting that this is one of the highest prices reached by avocado in recent months and that, according to some bidders, most consumers prefer to buy them by retail, for which they pay about $15 pesos.
