Monique Van Tendeloo, Quality Nuts:

Nuts and super foods becoming very expensive

At Quality Nuts, a supplier of nuts and dried fruit, super foods are really popular right now. The most popular items include; goji berries, mulberries, inca berries, cocoa nibs, chia seeds and quinoa. Quality Nuts has had these products in their assortment since the end of 2014.

Manager Paul Puyvelde says that super foods are popular right now because people are looking for healthier foods, "We know there are a few TV chefs who have released cookbooks with dishes that use a lot of super foods. Demand started at the end of last year for us. The products are available year round."

Making a mix
Paul cannot predict if super foods are a temporary fad, "Right now it is really a craze, everyone wants to try it. We expect to keep these products in our assortment, although for now we will not be adding any more." Customers do not yet have a preference for a certain kind of super food, "All the super foods are selling well: all the products taste equally good, there are not some that are better than others. Most people combine the different super foods to make a kind of mix (except quinoa because that product requires preparation)."

Quality Nuts has mixed feelings about the upcoming year, "We think that it won't go as well this year. All the products are becoming super expensive. Especially the price of hazelnuts, which is now three times what it was last year. We get new prices in daily, and often we have to re-adjust our own prices. The hazelnut used to be one of the cheapest nuts, and now it is one of the most expensive. On top of this, the dollar is doing very well now against the Euro and that does not help us. So the message is: wait and see what this year will bring, and be careful with purchases," says Paul.
