US (CA): Pinnacle Seed is growing strong

Lettuce seed industry veteran Mike Vanoli launched Pinnacle Seed in April of 2014, and like the seed his company develops and distributes, Pinnacle Seed is growing. Pinnacle Seed is locally owned and focused on fresh produce genetics, and recently unveiled new branding. The fresh logo reveals a message of high-quality seed and cutting-edge technology, a “combination of fundamental seed disciplines and advanced technology, which is the perfect representation of our business,” Vanoli said.

Vanoli started Pinnacle because he saw a need in the produce industry for a fully-integrated seed company that would work directly with growers and shippers to develop lettuce varieties to improve performance and maximize yields in various growing regions. “I’ve participated in all sides of the lettuce seed and produce industries, and I believe growers and shippers want to work directly with their genetics provider, and they want the in-the-field service only a locally owned company can provide,” said Vanoli.

Born and raised in the Salinas Valley, Vanoli has worked in the lettuce seed business since 1988 when he began interning at Genecorp Seed while completing his degree in agriculture business management at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.

Vanoli worked in product development and sales at Genecorp Seed before becoming a founding employee of Progeny Advanced Genetics in 1993. Vanoli joined grower-shipper Church Brothers in 2009, where he worked as the production manager until departing early in 2014 to start Pinnacle Seed.
