Algeria: off-season potato harvest to reach 11,200 tons in Boumerdes

Off-season potato harvest is expected to reach 11,200 tons in Boumerdes, an increase compared to the last season (2014) when production was estimated at 9,000 tons.

Underway since mid-January, the current season looks promising with a 320 ha (400 tons targeted) acreage and production reaching 8,900 tons.

According to estimations from the DSA, yield reached 280 quintals/ha in some fields.

Alongside this harvest is the seasonal potato harvest, that has stopped due to rainfall.

According to targets fixed by the region's performance contract for the sector, production should reach at least 73,500 tons of seasonal potatoes destined for consumption, as well as 2,000 tons of seed potatoes.

It should be noted that prices of this agricultural product, popular in Algerian households, have seen an “important increase” over the last few weeks in the region’s markets where it is sold between 70-90DA/kg, even 100DA/kg during some periods.
