helping hand loyal group of growers

Konaxx Onions starts up again

Early January, manager Tjerk Nagel announced that Konaxx Onions would immediately halt its activities. A loyal group of growers and suppliers who were willing to lend a helping hand, have turned this situation around. "We are very happy that we're able to return like this, in a somewhat downsized form," Tjerk says. The onion sorting and packing station from Sint Jacobi Parochie in Friesland (formerly Meijer BV) has been operational since 1917.

With Russia being the main export country, the boycott this summer really put a spanner in the works. "Until August, we were a healthy company, but then you buy a bit less competitively, and things go downhill fast," Tjerk says, looking back. "An important lesson is that we will spread our sales more widely. We are looking to the future with optimism. And we are happy that our sustainability project 'The Frisian Onion' can also continue."

Konaxx mainly exports within Europe, with the main markets being Scandinavia, Russia, Central Europe and the Baltic States. Clients included supermarkets, wholesalers and processing companies. In addition to onions, the company offers a year-round supply of potatoes, cabbage, carrots, beetroot, tubers, turnips, and leek.
