Italy: New sensors for graders and sorters

"Nature puts so much effort into creating each single fruit, that we at Aweta must do the same!" Says Jean-Luc Delcassé Managing Director Aweta Group - "We focus on the external and internal selection of our POWER VISION 3D-HS and Inscan IQA sensors: these new technologies enable us to ensure a long shelf-life and preserve the organic characteristics of each fruit. The selection of external and internal quality is the main element of lean production: eliminate waste, overproduction, errors and side effects such as the spread of disease and mould during processing and storage, ensuring that containers and packaging material remain healthy and intact."

Aweta will be in Berlin, where it will presents its Power Vision 3D-HS and Inscan IQA sensors that detect both internal and external quality. "The first one is an evolution of PV3D, which already achieved great results with apples, peaches, avocados, tomatoes and pears. HS stands for Hyper-Spectral, i.e. equipped with HD cameras that detect peel defects in order to classify them. The system is already being used on apples. The second system analyses the internal characteristics of the fruit such as ripening, sugar content, crunchiness etc.

"These two systems will be presented while installed on a Rollestar grader, the most popular model of our range. Together with Calistar (pregrader for kiwis and peaches), it is the heart of Aweta's high-productivity plants."

The headquarters are in Holland, and the company also has a branch in Italy and two in the US. It started off by developing small graders for cucumbers and tomatoes and has since become a great international producer with outlets in France, Poland, Russia, Mexico, Chile and China. It now manufactures complete systems equipped with the latest technologies for quality detection of external and internal defects. This opens up new frontiers in the sector, as uniform fruit classification is at reach and ensures practical, hygienic and economical solutions for supermarket presentation and therefore increased profitability for customers.

Aweta manufactures a wide range of sorters for apples, pears, stonefruit, kiwis, citrus fruit, tomatoes, peppers, avocados and mangos as well as sensors for the detection of external defects such as marks, rot, dents and black sports and internal defects such as rot, brown heart, softness, brix level and acidity.

"Our mission is research and development. The company is a market trailblazer when it comes to grading systems, quality sorting, box handling, robotics and tracking device. The integrated tracking system not only means the client can print and label each package and box individually, it also ensures that the operator, grower and retailer can easily access all relevant information about the packed product. The system operates according the GS1 norm."

"We integrate a smart user interface to facilitate the setting of parameters and detection sensitivity. The app was designed for touch screens, iPads and smartphones and it adapts rapidly to changes in sales demand by modifying quality thresholds. We have adopted the EC directive that defines risks and regulations concerning operators and the efficiency of our work."

"We feel there is much to be learned from every potential market, and are sure we have the right solutions to be the best international partner possible - Dutch reliability with Italian flexibility and flair. Although 2014 wasn't a great year for the global economy, we managed to produce 200 sorters, in line with the last ten years."

Aweta will take part in Fruit Logistica Berlin, Hall 3.1, Stand B-11.
