For a few weeks now there has not been enough coconuts to meet the demand. This results in higher prices, but Hans van der Kooij, from Joko Impex, prefers meeting demand. "The market situation now is resulting in much higher prices than in the previous month. Right now we are at about 12/12.50 Euro for a bag of 40 to 50 nuts from the Ivory Coast. We can only serve our regular customers, we have to say no to all the other demand coming in. For the next couple of weeks we are unfortunately sold out."
"Due to an export ban from Sri Lanka, nothing will be expected from this country for the coming weeks. Bigger nuts are coming from the Ivory Coast, making it a good alternative to Sri Lanka, but the problem is that the supply is really low. We are looking at alternatives, such as India or the Dominican Republic, but in order to achieve this, you'll be set back a bit more," concludes Hans. December is always a good month for coconuts. "During this time of the year a lot of nuts go to the East. Because this is not a European product, we can also export it to Russia. Usually during this time of the year there is not much interest from Southern Europe, but we are getting a reasonable amount of demand from that area now. In all, our coconut market is doing very well right now, but I would have preferred to have been able to meet demand as well," finishes Hans.
