"There is room for small, flexible companies in our trade"

Eric van Bergem starts own company

After a few years abroad, and having worked for various Dutch fresh produce wholesalers, Eric van Bergem's entrepreneurial instincts cropped up and he re-activated EvB Handelsonderneming. "I still had that private company from the Hoefnagels era in the Spaanse Polder. It's fine to have a boss, but I missed being an entrepreneur, and making my own decisions," the trader says.

For storage and transshipment, Eric entered into a partnership with the GDK Group in Barendrecht. He has a lot of faith in his company. "In my view, there's a future for small, flexible and motivated companies. I've gathered a lot of know-how and experience, and my costs are low. For such companies, I see a future in our trade. I also notice there's an interest in that. Many old clients are starting to make inquiries again."

"I am planning to carry a broad range, with the import of bananas, pineapples, citrus and exotics, and the export of carrots, celeriac and onions, with the emphasis on red onions. The export will make up the lion's share of my activities, and I'll mainly focus on the Caribbean, Scandinavia, Moldova, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary, Romania and Spain."
