Austria: above-average fruit production

During the 2014 fruit season in Austria, 272,000 tonnes of fruit (excluding elderberries) were cultivated, according to 'Statistik Austria'. That's 25% more than in 2013, and 12% more than the ten-year average, German website Gabot.de reports. This increase in production was realized despite slightly adverse weather conditions, with drought in spring, a summer with humid, cool weather and few hours of sunshine, and a very rainy autumn. Fruit quality partly suffered from these adverse weather conditions, particularly the berries. The good water supply, however, also caused larger stonefruit.

The stonefruit harvest amounted to 14,100 tonnes, ending up below last year's excellent result (-20%). Compared to the long-term average, however, production was above average (+8%).

Elderberries saw a better than average harvest with a production amount of 9,600 tonnes (+32% compared to 2013), but due to the wet weather, the required quality often wasn't achieved.
