Peru: Ginger exports quadrupled

In recent years, the ginger export business has taken a major leap in Peru. According to information provided to FreshPlaza by ADEX, the Exporters Association, the value of exports between 2012 and 2014 has increased from US $4,037,462 to $17,352,911, and the main destinations are the United States, the Netherlands and Germany.

This increase in exports has been largely due to the fall in production in China and the consequent increase in prices, which greatly reduced Chinese exports.

"This year has been quite intense for ginger in Peru following the poor Chinese offer. There are many new exporters and there was a very good level of employment in the region," said Fernando Salas, of SADE Trading.

Grouping small producers from the department of Junin, SADE GROUP produces and exports organic ginger mainly to the Netherlands and the United States. The company creates business partnerships with customers who value good production practices and the effort made by SADE to contribute to the development of local communities.

"We group forty producers in eighty hectares for the production of ginger. We have the ecological and GlobalGAP certifications," Fernando said.

The outlook for next season will be very different because China has planted an additional 30% and their harvest is expected to be 50% higher.

"I believe that Peru will grow only 10% in 2015, as China will have much more presence than last year in the markets. For our part, we want to become a major player in the sector of the Peruvian ginger and develop other products," says Fernando.
