Brazilian retailers demanding more greenhouse produce:

Mais Saúde building high tech greenhouse in Brazil

One of the first modern production greenhouses for tomato cultivation is currently being built in Brazil. In Londrina, a city located in the north of the state of Paraná in the South of Brazil, "Mais Saúde" is building a greenhouse project as an answer to the rising demand for locally grown quality produce.

We learned about the project when we met a large delegation from Brazil (organized by the Brazilian Greenhouse Consulting Company - EACEA ) at the Expo AgroAlimentaria Guanajuato, that was held in the Mexican city of Irapuato last month. The group of suppliers, investors and other professionals were exploring the possibilities of advanced greenhouse horticulture and learning from the Mexican industry. Amongst them was a Brazilian entrepreneur Adriana Galimberti Sutherland from "Mais Saúde". Her company is claiming to be realizing the first commercial tomato high tech greenhouse project in Brazil.

The greenhouse is a 1.2 hectare plastic greenhouse (double vented, 12.8 span and 5.5m under gutter) built and designed by a local Brazilian company. According to Galimberti, the greenhouse will be of paramount importance to producing high quality tomatoes for the local markets. "At this moment, there aren't that many greenhouses in Brazil, but the market is demanding better products that are grown in a sustainable and efficient way. A greenhouse is a perfect solution to realize better harvests and to create products with extra value", Galimberti said.

The construction for the greenhouse commenced this summer. At the moment the greenhouse is closed, but a lot of details are still needed to be carried out. Consulter Andrés da Silva from EACEA is giving directions to complete the project successfully. They expect to have a PRIVA computer and all other equipments, as Mrs Galimbert says "to grow in a high tech way, by using modern hydroponic cultivation methods."

Galimberti expects to plant the first crop in the beginning of 2015. She will plant youngplants that are propagated by a local breeder. The tomatoes will be packed and shipped for the local market.
