“At the moment, growers are not interested in selling on the export market because of low prices,” said Palle Juhl of Northern Greens. Juhl works with onion growers in Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Poland and Spain, and he ships onions from those countries all over Europe. But a good growing season and a successful harvest has brought robust volumes of onions in Nordic countries. Those big volumes have made for low prices.
“It's been a fine harvest, with normal-to-high yields, so there are good volumes in storage,” said Juhl. “So packers are not sending fruit to exporters, because most European countries have big volumes and this causes low prices. Domestically they have better prices and less risk.”
