The winter vegetable season it's still quite unusual. Warm autumn temperatures favoured production, but they slowed consumption down, therefore affecting prices.
The only vegetable with quite stable prices are tomatoes, which have been benefiting by the damage that affected its Moroccan competitors.
The situation is completely different for aubergines and peppers, as Italian markets and retailers are buying produce from Spain which, thanks to the high temperatures, is producing a lot and selling the vegetables at low prices.
In Italy, the bad weather of the latest period damaged open field crops (cabbage, cauliflower, fennel, etc.), though greenhouse crops are doing great. This means that the situation is not so good in Calabria, as most of the produce is cultivated in open fields, whereas things are much better in the Salerno province and Abruzzo, as the prices of greenhouse cauliflowers are much higher than average.
In the meantime, operators in the South are increasingly convinced that production will overlap with that from the North in 20-30 days' time, so there will be oversupply. Then there will be a lack of supply in the following month.
Of course, this has yet to be verified, as the slightest weather change could lead to a totally different situation.
