Dutch season over

Spanish cucumber production disappointing after large supply

Although the supply of cucumbers from Spain started later this year, there has been a large supply on the market for the last few weeks due to the good weather. In the meantime, weather conditions in Spain have worsened, and production is falling. "The winter crop was planted in the same way it was last year in Spain," says a spokesman from the Kompany. "The question now is whether a second cucumber or melon crop will follow; and that will depend on how much will be yielded."

Dutch supply is as good as over. Only the Kompany has a few growers still in production, but it is expected that they will be on the market no longer than 10 more days. The Kompany looks back on a bad cucumber year. "The situation of Dutch horticulture is dramatic, and the situation of farmers is, in many cases, more serious than many people think."
