In 2013, 25,000 tons on pineapples were imported and distributed in Italy, Spain, France, Northern Europe, Portugal and Greece. "This year, thanks to our distribution network and investments in marketing and communication, we should reach 43,500 tons, 74% more than the previous year."
"Concerning prices, it is actually difficult to make a comparison as produce was really scarce during the first half 2013, whereas this year it has been abundant and of excellent quality."
Varieties
Fratelli Orsero pineapples come from Costa Rica, the leading pineapple producer worldwide. The fruit is produced with integrated agricultural methods and the name of the variety is MD2, which is also known as extra sweet because the flesh is juicy and sweet with an unmistakeable aroma.
"This is the main variety sold to Europe, as consumers prefer its golden colour with a yellow and sweet flesh."
Market trends - crownless pineapples
In the past few years, demand for crownless pineapples has been increasing in Italy, Spain and France.
"Our group also imports this product, which requires a particular 'processing', i.e. the removal of the leaves. In Europe, this type of pineapple is mainly destined to those clients who then process it and transform it into fresh-cut products."
"Fresh-cut pineapples are destined to consumers looking for a high-quality product with a little extra - fresh and genuine fruit that is also practical and can be eaten at any time."
