US (CA): Brussels sprout harvest met with good demand

The main part of harvesting got underway late last month for California's Brussels sprouts growers. Early on, their vegetables have been met with strong prices spurred on by good demand.

“The market has been very nice” said Steve Bontadelli of Pfyffer Associates. “We've had increased demand from our regular customers, and, overall, more people are eating Brussels sprouts.” He attributes that demand to the high-profile praise the product has gotten about its health benefits. To keep up with that demand, he noted that acreage has increased up by about 20 percent over the last few years.

“The price for a 25-pound box is about $24.00,” said Bontadelli, “which is historically high for this time of year.” Consumers wanting more fresh product have caused growers to direct more of their product to the fresh market, as opposed to the frozen product market. Harvesting is expected to last through January in California.
