Romania: 27 agricultural traders arrested on alleged tax evasion

Romanian police officers carried out 46 house searches in the municipality of Bucharest and the counties of Ilfov, Buzau, Teleorman and Giurgiu in an operation targeted at people suspected of tax evasion. More than 170 police officers participated in the action.

As a result, 27 people were arrested and will be brought to court.

"The operation aims to prove the criminal activity of several individuals of Romanian and Italian origin suspected of committing irregularities in the sale of fruit and vegetables. Those involved allegedly carried out illicit accounting on false purchases and sales carried out by 15 ghost companies from December 2013 to August 2014. The losses caused by these activities have been estimated at about 2 million Euro, according to a statement released by the police.
