Germany: 1 million tonne apple line exceeded

The 2014 German apple harvest may not be finished yet, but the German fruit growers expect a very good apple harvest of around 1.02 million tonnes, reports the German website Fruchthandel.e.

The German Bureau for Statistics (Destatis) reported that based on current estimates until August 2014 the harvest will be almost 8% above the average of the last ten years. The average of the last ten years is 952,000 tonnes. Compared to the very bad harvest year of 2013, in which almost 804,000 tonnes of apples were harvested, this is even an increase of around 27%. This is mainly due to the favourable weather conditions in 2014. The last time to 1 million tonne mark was exceeded was in 2009.
