Italy: Some positive feedback for pears abroad

"Our sales managers are working to find alternatives to the Russian market, although the biggest effect of the ban is the indirect pressure on the markets," explains Giuseppe Scarfone, export manager of Fruit Modena Group.

William pears.

"We mostly work abroad, where our main competitors are Belgium and the Netherlands. They were really affected by the ban and are now pressurizing the international markets with their conference pears."

Red William pears.

The frequent rain in spring and summer accelerated ripening, and harvesting had to be carried out very quickly. "This in turn is reflected on the prices, which are quite low on the domestic market, whereas they are a little better abroad. They should increase though, as quality is very good."

"Grades are medium-big and we only have 5-10% overproduction. The volumes of William and red William pear are similar than 2013, whereas Abete pears registered +10%."

Abate Fetel.

"We are really working on packaging, as we are always looking or something new. We must also say though that current margins mean we can't invest a lot, so for the moment we have to stick to the classic options."
