Blue potatoes are grown in Russia

Scientists of Redkinsky Agricultural Company in Tver region have cultivated a hybrid of coloured potato in a test tube. The new variety is claimed to be rich in vitamins and ideal for a healthy diet.

With the help of the breeders from the Institute of Potato Farming, Redkinsky Company has introduced several new hybrids with coloured tubers, flesh and skin. The variety of potatoes has not got a name yet, however, this year it will be registered, and in 2015 will go on sale.

The breeders assure that the blue potato is in high demand abroad, and will soon become popular in Russian restaurant business and among producers of French fries.

Blue potatoes yield well (about 30 tonnes per hectare), they are resistant to diseases, and possess high market qualities. It is an early ripening variety with low content of starch but high content of vitamin C and antioxidants.
