Peru will export avocados to China
The huge Chinese market will soon be open to Peruvian avocados.
After a year of negotiations, the AQSIQ is about to approve the protocol sanitary measures for the export of Peruvian avocados. After the protocol is signed, there will be an administrative process, which takes about two month, so Peru could be making its first shipment of avocados to China in December.
The period from October to December is the least favourable moment for the production of avocados as only 16% of the total production is generated at such a time. 70% of the national production is produced between March and August, the most favourable period (data from the Ministry of Agriculture).
Total exports of avocados are expected to reach $215 million by the end of 2014, 20% more over the last year. Mexico is the leading exporter with 43% of exports, Spain ranks third and Chile fourth.
