French potato producers buy back their own products in a supermarket

Farmers from the National Union of Potato Producers led a symbolic operation in a supermarket in Calais on Monday to denounce “cut prices” found in supermarkets.

They arrived in a Carrefour supermarket in Calais with empty trolleys and filled them with potatoes a few minutes later. They are sold at €2.90/ 25 kilos, according to the producers this is a lot cheaper than their own production costs. They decided to buy their own merchandise to give to charity.

The current situation is difficult for potato producers who are also seeing prices plummet due to the Russian embargo.

Following the situation on Monday, the Carrefour store has promised to remove the potatoes in question, but the farmers remain wary. If the situation does not change, other stronger actions will be taken.
