Say a final goodbye to Chiquita; downtown office tower dropping the name

It’s been nearly three years since Chiquita Brands International Inc. announced it was leaving Cincinnati for Charlotte, N.C. And now, one of the last reminders of the banana distributor’s departure is going away.

Say goodbye to Chiquita Center and hello to 250 East Fifth, for now.

Rob Click, a senior managing director with CBRE in Columbus and receiver for the downtown office tower, said the building will no longer be known as Chiquita Center. For the time being, the more than 537,000-square-foot building will go by the moniker of 250 East Fifth, playing off its address of 250 E. Fifth St. But Click said with the top six floors of the 29-story building available for lease, the hope is that a new company will come in and want the naming rights.

“It’s probably the best opportunity for a major tenant in the central business district of Cincinnati to have a building named after them,” Click told me Monday. “That’s what we would love to do.”
