Large apple harvest expected in Switzerland

In Switzerland, a harvest of 152,600 tonnes of apples and 25,110 tonnes of pears from fruit plantations is expected this year, German website Proplanta.de reports. With these quantities, both apples and pears are seeing one of the largest harvests in recent years, comparable to the years 2007, 2009 and 2011.

The average harvest amount of the past ten years would be surpassed by 6% for apples, and 9% for pears. Compared to the 2013 season, when the harvest amount was below average, 15% more apples and 16% more pears are forecast for 2014.

Compared to the previous year, the apple acreage decreased by 82.5 hectares (-2.1%) to 3,910 hectares. The pear acreage on the other hand, increased by 8.3 hectares (+1.1%) to 777 hectares.
