"Jan van Heijningen: "Big growth in the pepper market"

Eminent presents specialty's in in-store display

Where some of the fruit and vegetable companies have had to really push through some hard summer months, Jan van Heijningen from Eminent Food - one of Europe's largest suppliers and producers of exclusive greenhouse vegetables that differ in size, form, colour and taste - is not complaining. "We actually came through pretty well over the summer and we did not suffer much from the crisis in Russia. During the Ehec-period the Russian boycott hit us hard, but the last two years our exported volumes have been going less and less to Russia. I feel reassured knowing that we are less dependent on the Russian market."

Display
Eminent Food does not export their products themselves but instead supplies their specialitys to retailers, wholesalers and exporters in the Netherlands. The in-store display is a new development for the company in which their complete assortment of peppers, point-paprika's, baby-paprika's, Tomberry's and differently coloured tomatoes are promoted. The local AH in Koornneef had the first such display, but since then other retailers have also showed an interest in rolling out the display throughout the country. "It is too early to tell now, but I expect that with this display we will definitely see an increase in sales," says Jan.

At the product level, the coloured tomatoes and peppers in particular are seeing strong growth. "Tomatoes are still our largest product, but the peppers - especially the Habanero peppers - are on the rise, and form our second product category. We have a good pepper grower in Uganda and we are very optimistic about the winter season. In Spain and Israƫl winter means high prices, that is why we are looking for somewhere closer to the equator. That could mean places like Mexico or the Dominican Republic, but the export is as good as forbidden due to the weevil. That is why I expect us to really do well with the Ugandan peppers," says Jan.
