'Ugly' fruit for German Bondsdag

The German 'Welthungerhilfe' and other organisations have started a campaign against wasting food names 'Genießt uns!', reports the German newspaper 'Rheinische Post' on its website. At the start of the campaign they handed out 'ugly' apples which do not meet the standards of beauty, as well as the previous day's baked goods and muesli bars and drinks that are almost out of date, to members of parliament and Bondsdag employees outside the Reichstag, the German parliamentary building.

"It cannot be that 840 million people in the world are starving and we just throw this away," said Anne-Catrin Hummel, food referent of the 'Welthungerhilfe'. Other organisations who are involved in the two year campaign are the 'Bundesverband Deutsche Taflen' (the union of German food banks), WWF Germany and the initiative 'foodsharing.de'.
