Peru seeks to have closer trade relations with Switzerland

Peru could become Switzerland's new food provider in the near future, as there is currently a high demand for Peruvian products such as bananas, avocados, paprika and asparagus, said Luis Chuquihuara, Ambassador of Peru in this country.

Chuquihuara said that there was a marked dynamism in bilateral agricultural trade due to the high turnover of Peruvian products in Swiss supermarkets.

"Agribusiness will be the star sector of Peruvian exports for the coming years. We also see a big potential for the fisheries and textile sectors, which will gradually grow with new products," he said.

Chuquihuara said bilateral relations between both countries were at their best moment. Furthermore, he said, this year we are commemorating two important facts. "The first is the commemoration of the 130 years of bilateral relations, as these began in 1884, and the second is the 50th anniversary of bilateral cooperation, as Switzerland supports us in the fight against poverty, climate change implications and the improvement of the public administration's efficiency," he added.

He also stated that Switzerland was one of Peru's most important trade partners in the European bloc because much of the Peruvian mining exports go to that market.

A successful decision
Zurich is a European centre par excellence for all that is business, science, finance, education and culture. Therefore, this city's choice of joining the European Road Show 2014, organized by in Peru, is an opportunity for Peru to enter one of the most competitive markets in the world, said Chuquihuara.

Peru and Switzerland have three main international conventions governing modern relationships.

"The first is the investment protection agreement; the second is the TLC and finally this year the agreement of double taxation exemption was put in place, "he said.

Data
Trade between Peru and Switzerland amounted to USD $3,000 million in 2013.

Ambassador Chuquihuara said bilateral trade this year would be very similar to last year because of circumstantial factors.

Swiss cooperation, which was traditionally focused on humanitarian assistance, is now focusing on the training of public and private management.
