Peru: Dominus expects to increase exports of Red Globe grapes by 30% in 2014

The Dominus Company plans to increase its shipments of Red Globe grapes by 30% this year, confirmed Milton Calle, agriculture manager for the company, to international buyers who were visiting the company's plant in Piura.

As part of the Fruits and Vegetables Route of the Expoalimentaria fair, buyers from Colombia (Colombina) and South Korea (Foodya Food) visited several plants and different grape and mango fields from this company and other recognized companies in Piura and La Libertad.

Milton Calle said Dominus had exported 60 containers of grapes in 2013, and that they expected to export 100 containers this year heading to Asian countries such as Indonesia, China and Vietnam. "The harvest of this fruit has been very good thanks to the weather conditions," he said.

He also said that last year's mango shipments had amounted to 600 containers (140,000 tonnes), which represented growth for the company as they had only exported 70 containers when they had started shipping this fruit in 2007.

However, he said, this year wouldn't be as good because the ocean warming had affected their harvest. Thus, expectations are they would only export 80,000 tons of mangoes this year.

Calle said that the avocado was also one of their flagship products, as they had exported 100 containers of it in 2013. The main destinations of mango and avocado shipments, he said, were to countries of the European Union, especially Germany, UK and Spain.
