German Öko-Institute: how much does eating healthy cost?

Is healthy food actually expensive? The German Öko-Institute researched what costs are hidden from Germans in the food industry. The research showed that the general diet of Germans nowadays is anything but sustainable and healthy: too much meat, fat, and sugar. More than half of all Germans are overweight and almost one-fourth suffer from obesity or other food related diseases.

The research showed that Germans would not have to spend more to eat healthy if they changed their purchasing behaviour (through buying organic food and fair trade products) and coupled this with a change in eating behaviour. The higher cost of organic food can be offset through changing eating habits to include more vegetables and fruit and less meat. Healthy food costs only 81 Euro more (per year) - that is not even seven Euro a month.
