Germans eating less table grapes

On average Germans consumed 5.1 kg of table grapes per person in 2013, reported the German website Proplanta.de. This number includes all the products that are made from table grapes as well, such as grape juices and jellies. The consumption of table grapes has been slowing for a few years now. In 2007 Germans consumed on average 6.9 kg per person, in 2010 this number decreased to 5.9 kg per person.

The German production only covers a small part of the domestic demand. In 2013 Germany imported almost 320,000 tons of fresh table grapes from abroad. More than 40 percent of the imported grapes came from Italy and around 12 percent came from Greece.

Table grapes are not used in the making of wine. They are directly consumed as fruit or processed further. There are many varieties available that differ by colour (white, red, or blue) and taste. There are also seedless grapes and grapes with seeds. The light, seedless grapes appear to be the most popular among consumers.
