Italy: Too many potatoes in Europe

"Almost all potato varieties are priced at €0.05/kg in the Naples area and it is almost impossible to sell abroad. There are too many potatoes in Europe and, what is worse, their prices are lower than ours. What other countries pay as production costs is what we pay as merely harvesting costs," explains a local broker.

"Last year, harvesting was already over at this time. Currently, France and Spain are practically giving away their potatoes for free. Quality in Campania is still good, but soon hot weather will destroy everything. I believe 70% of the production will be lost - producers no longer have the courage or the money to invest."

"We were already going through a rough patch due to the Terra dei Fuochi scandal... Harvesting in Fucino will start in a few weeks' time, I don't see a solution."

"Supermarket chains prefer the lower prices of foreign produce. In addition, Sicilian and Apulian potatoes are still on the market, so they are part of the competition."

"France is selling potatoes at ridiculous prices to make room in units, as soon as new potatoes arrive. We have no way of storing our potatoes, so we are further penalised." It seems that at the moment there is no easy solution.
