Seasonal farm workers exempt from new legislation in Germany

A legislation regarding the minimum wage was voted for on the 3rd July. 300,000 seasonal workers in German agriculture will be exempt from the new legislation. For 20 or so years most of the labourers come from Eastern Europe. The employers may now be able to deduct their lodgings and food from their wages. Over 70 days the employees will not have to pay social security contributions either. The meat industry, renowned for it's social dumping, will have signed an agreement on a €7.75/ hour wage on the 1st July, €8/hour on 1st December, €8.60 on the 1st October 2015 and €8.75 on the 1st December 2016. 1,600 new employments are expected and will help fight against illegal employment.
