Jan Rozema, Olympic Fruit:

"Good demand for mandarins and Navels; grapefruits struggling"

The Spanish Navel season is over. Several retailers will switch to South African produce in the coming weeks. According to Jan Rozema from Olympic Fruit, demand for Navels is good. "We are expecting a stable market in the coming weeks. Grapefruit is struggling this season, while the mandarin market is good. The coming weeks will see a supply of Clemenules and Clemennovas. The first Or & Nadorcott mandarins are expected at the end of July."

Juice Oranges
Demand for juice oranges is good as well, according to the importer. "We have been able to put ourselves in a good position with Morocco, with having supply from the later regions. The supply of Spanish Valencias will continue for a few more weeks. The first Early Valencias are on their way from the north of South Africa. The supply is not exaggerated."

The announced measurements regarding Citrus Black Spot when exporting to Europe, have had a significant impact on South African producers, according to Jan. "A large number of growers can't export to Europe. There are also a large number of growers who will not risk it, selling their produce in other parts of the world instead, such as Russia, along with the Middle and Far East. Europe is still important to South Africa, but a lot of alternatives have come up during the past few years, which has had its effect on the volumes."

Minneolas Peru
The first Peruvian Minneolas are expected in week 28. Olympic Fruit is the exclusive representative of Huamani in Europe. This family business, led by Ismael and Marita Benavides, has been growing Minneolas for over 20 years, overseeing the entire growth process themselves. For instance, they make their own compost, and the seeds are processed right up to the end product, in-house. Additionally, Huamani has been awarded a Green Farm certificate, thanks to their sustainable growing method.

Packaging
Olympic Fruit has specialized in packaging citrus for years. "Retail in particular demands small packaging of citrus. We offer various mesh nets, but we also supply citrus laid out in EPS." Jan concludes.
