The various growing regions of early potatoes in Germany will soon start competing with each other more than usual, since potatoes will ripen almost everywhere simultaneously this year, German website agrarheute.com reports.
Climate conditions in the various growing regions for early potatoes differ, which normally ensures that the potatoes will not enter the market at the same time. However, from the growers' perspective, distribution this year isn't as optimal as in other years, which means the regions will soon compete with each other more strongly. This situation will however, meet consumer demand for regionality, sustainability and quality assurance.
The early potatoes that are ripening in the southwest of Germany at the moment, have very limited tuber growth. Therefore, harvest yields are not particularly large in that region. Things are looking different in the Rhineland and the state of Lower Saxony, where high harvest yields are to be expected. In general, things are also looking good for the main crop, which can hit the market early as well this year.
