More than 20,000 producers in the Dominican Republic banana industry will benefit from a program of economic aid from the European Union (EU).

The project, which has funds that amount to 12.5 million Euro, aims to promote technical assistance, institutional strengthening and a financing fund.

Meanwhile, according to sources, the Dominican government approved a line of credit through the state Reserve Bank for more than $10 million dollars to strengthen the country's productive and export capacity.

According to official figures, the cultivation of bananas in the Dominican generates about 28,000 direct jobs and 54,000 temporary ones.

In 2013, the country exported more than 347,000 metric tons of the fruit, which represented approximately $164,134,000 dollars.
