Plantain banana prices too high on the Ivory Coast

Plantain bananas, much in demand on the Ivorian market, are expensive. Three unripened bananas are between 100-150 fcfa (€0.15-0.22). Four bananas are sold at 200 fcfa (€0.30). It costs between 300-400 fcfa (€0.45-0.60) for a bunch of 4 large and well formed bananas.

Lack of supply on the market is to blame for the prices. "It is not yet banana season'' says a seller in Koumassi. Cassava which is used in banana production adds to these difficulties. Three small tubercles of cassava cost 200 fca. For a 10 person family these prices are too high.
