Uruguay: Residues detected in 10% of fruit and veg on the market

10% of the samples of the fruit and vegetables available in the Uruguayan market have pesticide residues that exceed the maximum limits set by the European Union.

According to the Food Service Regulation, via the Laboratory of Food Science of Montevideo, the latest research detected excesses of the following substances: Ima-Zalil, cypermethrin, Diazinon and Ipro-dione. In addition, 9% of the samples had residues of unregulated pesticides.

A report from the municipality said that the results of the tests carried out in 2013 could be explained because the European regulations are more demanding than the national regulations. The document noted that the number of samples with pesticide residues exceeding the established limits have decreased by 50% when compared to 2012.
