A limited volume of 220 (6kg) trays were flown in to Shanghai Pudong International Airport on May 24. Rosstan Mazey, Global Marketing Manager for New Zealand's Turners & Growers who own the ENZA brand said that the red kiwis will be distributed by Chinese company Shanghai Zelun Trading Co Ltd.
"The ENZARed kiwis will be sold at RT Mart supermarkets, there will be in-store promotion in place, including tastings and merchandising."
The red kiwis will retail at a similar price to Zespri Gold kiwis.
The ENZARed has also been exported to Australia, this will be the first year for commercial sales in this market. "The programme there is in its second week with in-store sampling and promotional activity being driven this week to promote the new product," explained Mazey
15,000 trays of ENZARed was harvested this season, Mazey expects that next years volumes will increase, "ENZARed is an inherently smaller kiwifruit and we still have a lot to learn about this exciting new variety. Next year we anticipate being able to grow and deliver significantly higher volumes. It is likely that we will continue to focus our effort on Australia and Asia."
