California Giant blues entering peak season
There is considerable excitement about the California volume and quality expected for the next several weeks due to weather conditions, plant health and varietal mix. “All systems are ‘go’ and ready to carry us through June with absolutely fantastic quality and size” says Evan Pence, California Giant Operations Manager for North America Blueberries.
The coastal regions continue to harvest organic even though conventional availability is on the decline. However, the California central valley growers are very pleased with increasing volume along with optimal quality and size of the fruit ready for harvest. While the volume is expected to peak the week ending May 17th, weekly numbers will remain consistent throughout the month of June. The volume from California combined with added acreage in Georgia this year is providing an easy transition into the Northwest crop that is expected in early July.
