China: Hundreds of acres of Nanhu vegetable greenhouses under water
Farmers have rented the land for more than 10 years to grow crops. Now it’s all flooded. More than 100 households use this area for their livelihood. The damages are estimated to reach millions of yuan.
The cause of the flood is believed to be heavy rains and a road nearby under construction. Heavy rains normal lead to the rising of South Lake. Normally the drainage in the area would take care of the flow of heavy rains. However because of the road construction, some of the drainage is blocked. And without anywhere to go, the rising waters backed up and flooded the greenhouses.
The Hongshan District Water Affairs Bureau responsible for South Lake are organizing a team technical team to investigate the situation. The Bureau stated they will be looking at the drainage set up of the vegetable greenhouses and other factors to prevent the flooding from happening in the future.
