Shekeltronics looks for worldwide distributors

'Grab-a-bag' accounts for a 40% reduction in plastic bag use

Shekeltronix is an Israeli organisation founded in 2005. The company develops special solutions for retailers. The concept 'Grab-a-bag' is an innovative solution for the surplus and waste of plastic carrier bags. Ido Cohen explains, "Plastic bags are used worldwide by supermarkets and retailers and constitute a serious risk to the environment. Therefore many countries are forced to tax or plan to charge the consumer. The 'Grab-a-bag' machine can be connected to a cash register and ensures that the consumer gets exactly the number of bags for which he paid for, or will be charged automatically by the use of each bag. An employee from the supermarket can operate and indicate if the machine should produce one or more bags. The machine can also be set in advance. It is then possible to keep track of how many bags are used in the whole day. That is much more environmentally friendly.

40% Reduction
"Supermarkets are very enthusiastic", says Ido. "These machines ensure that 40% less bags are used. Many customers are used to packing a number of bags. This is just what they have been used to. Now that excess has stopped. There are different pilot schemes, among others at Walmart. These were financed by the British Government in order to reduce the use of plastic bags. We were first particularly in Israel, but now we have plans to install the machine in Spain, Turkey, Russia and the US. We are focused now on the global market and are searching for distributors. We recently took the 'Grab-a-bag' to the Warsaw World-Food exhibition to reach the Polish market. There was also a lot of interest shown here."

More and more organisations recognise that they want to be more sustainable. By reducing the use of plastic bags, 'Grab-a-bag' is an important contribution to the environmental friendliness of an organisation", concludes Ido.
