Melon farming begins in France after 3 week delay

Since the end of March/ beginning of April, melon farming (under plastic tunnels) has started in Lomagne- despite a 3 week delay mainly due to muddy soil.

However, it is noticeable that there is less planted surface due to rotation of plots (80 ha less). At the moment the plastic is on the ground- time and weather will tell whether tunnels will be set up.

The melon farming area has moved to the border of the Gers region, with some small Lomagne producers growing 'hill' melons on plantations spread out over 3 months. Farmed acreage will reach 300 ha. These plantations are often rented enabling a supplementary income during crisis. Farmers rent their land (€1,000/ha on average) and producers work on it. Farm rotation lasts 7-8 years for 2 reasons: avoid tiring the land and reduce risk of melon-related diseases. Melons are farmed on a just-in-time basis depending on market demand (guaranteeing freshness). Melon farming is demanding and relies on qualified workers.
