Chile: Hortifrut's sales increased 22% in fourth quarter 2013

Hortifrut's sales amounted to U.S. $262 million up to December 31, 2013, 22% more than in 2012, as a result of a 20.4% increase in volume, which amounted to 34,202 tons, and a 1.3% rise in average revenue per kilo of the berries mix.

Revenue from the sale of blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and fresh strawberries represented 94% of the company's consolidated revenues during the period between January and December 2013. Sales from value-added products accounted for 5% of consolidated revenues and the sales of two European subsidiaries accounted for the remaining 1%.

Operating income totalled $31 million in December, 68.3% more than in the same period of 2012.

The company reported an EBITDA of $37.4 million, i.e. 61.3% more than in 2012. This amount includes $3.1 million dollars in income generated from the sale of two European subsidiaries as part of the restructuring in the continent due to the merger with Vitalberry Marketing.

The improvement in sales and earnings during 2013 is mainly due to the good performance of the company's international subsidiaries and the high turnover as a result of the recent merger, materialized in August 2013.

Net income attributable to drivers increased by 22% to 14.8 million. The company made investments for more than U.S. $30 million between January and December 2013 in new plantations and infrastructure, all within its five years investment plan.

Hortifrut is a global company dedicated to the genetic development, production, marketing and distribution of berries. Given their superfood qualities (high content of antioxidants) berries are one of the major fruit products in the world with one of the highest consumption growth rates.

Currently, the company has operations in North America, Central America, South America, Europe and Asia.
