Germany: consumers spend increasingly less on food

German consumers spent 1,442 billion Euro in total in 2012, reports the German website Proplanta.de. The 'Rheinische Landwirtschafts-Verband' (RLV) announced that 170 billion Euro of this (11.7%) was spent on food and alcohol free drinks.

People also spent 45 billion Euro on alcoholic drinks and tobacco wares. This means that the share of the money spent on foods out of the total consumer spending has increased slightly compared to the previous year. But the spending on the long term has a clear decreasing percentage, according to RLV. The reason for this long term tendency is the increase in income and the below average increase of food prices.
