Argentina: Potato prices spike due to bad weather in production areas

Once again, the weather has influenced the horticultural market and has had negative effects on the price of potatoes. In recent days, as a result of the storms and the floods in production areas, the price of a box of potatoes increased by more than 30% in Tucuman's Mercofrut,, the main wholesale and retail centre of in the provincial capital.

Juan Carlos Medina, vice president of Mercofrut, confirmed this by saying that the bulk price of potatoes had increased from 80 pesos to 110 pesos; a price increase that was transferred to the consumer in the vegetable markets. "It's raining all over the country. Production areas are flooded right now. The price, however, will go back to normal when the weather gets better, but this won't happen overnight," said the manager.

The potatoes marketed and consumed in the local market during this time of year come from Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Catamarca. "We still have stock; we did not run out of merchandise due to last weekend's shipments," he said. Medina noted that this situation could also affect onions as they were also grown beneath ground level.
