Spain: First Galia melons from Almeria entering the market

April marks the arrival of the earliest melon varieties, in this case Galia melons, to Almeria's market. The mild weather conditions in Europe, with maximum temperatures of between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius in some EU member state capitals, like Paris or Berlin, have favoured the sale of these Galia melons at quite acceptable prices.

On Wednesday 2 April, some of the first Galia melon auctions took place at Femago and La UniĆ³n and the prices reached were of 0.92 and 0.96 Euro/kilo respectively. Were prices to remain at those levels during the coming days and the month of May, when the spring production volumes will peak, the final results would be considered exceptional.
