Brazil: Vale da Ribeira's banana producers facing losses of up to 30%

In the Brazilian region of Vale da Ribeira, one of the country's largest banana producers, growers may have to face losses of up to 30%.

Producers are concerned about the entry of Ecuadorian bananas, and thus Brazil's government is finalising the latest regulations for the import of fruit from its neighbouring country.

Vale da Ribeira is renowned as a large producer and responsible for 50% of Sao Paulo's production. The last few months have been difficult for the region's growers, with just 30 hectares of banana crops cultivated.

Excessive heat and lack of rainfall have caused severe damages to the production. "The annual loss could be as high as 60%, and it is certain that 30% of next year's harvest will be lost, as well," stated the grower.
