Spain: Vélez-Málaga to use mangoes and avocados for self-promotion

The Andalusian municipality of Vélez-Málaga, Europe's largest avocado and mango producer and exporter, will promote itself in thirty countries through a campaign that will highlight the qualities of both its agricultural produce and the town as a tourist destination.

Andalusia's councillor for Tourism and Commerce, Rafael Rodríguez and the mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, signed an agreement for the development of this initiative.

The campaign, called "The flavour of a region", was presented at the Castillo del Marqués Hospitality School, where some of the town's main agricultural entrepreneurs, who also collaborate with the project, were in attendance. It consists of highlighting Vélez-Málaga's strengths as a tourist attraction, on the packaging of the town's subtropical products, edited in Spanish, English, German and French.

The councillor considered it a "very innovative idea, which will set an example for all future promotions of Andalusia in combination with its agricultural production."

As a result of the initiative, those purchasing tropical products from Vélez-Málaga, wherever they are exported, will receive plenty of information about the region's weather, history, culture, food and tourist attractions, including the town's beaches.

"Vélez-Málaga is already known for its avocados and mangoes and we now also want to promote its potential as a tourist destination, its architectural heritage and its 22 kilometres of beaches," he concluded.
